It’s Waterfall Wednesday so I dug up this throwback to a remote triple-cascade in the Superstition Mountains.
I took this photo way back in December 2012. It was nearly the new year, and the fall colors were still putting on a show in this rugged little canyon. As legendary Arizona photographer Derek von Briesen describes it, our autumn here is almost endless.
While the aspens and maples of the higher altitudes have long lost their leaves, exploring the obscure canyons tucked in the foothills of desert ranges may reveal a fall oasis still brimming with golden color.
This canyon in particular — which I’m not naming publicly at this point to protect it from potential overuse — I would like to revisit. The general area was affected by the 2019 Woodbury, which torched 123,875 acres of the Superstition Wilderness, and I’d like to see if this spot is still intact. On another day I’ll get into the specifics of wildfires in the desert, but for now let’s just soak up this scenery.
Happy hump day,
-Jake
