On this day in 1971, Arches National Monument was upgraded to Arches National Park. Today it is one of the most beloved, and popular, in America’s National Park system.
I took this photo at the famous view of Turret Arch through the North Window during a trip with my dad in November 2010. We made the short hike up at sunrise in time to see this red glow illuminate the sandstone fins. An example of the unforgettable experiences our National Parks provide.
Spaces to find and appreciate the wonders of nature. Time to spend with those we love the most — or to enjoy solitude alone.
The National Parks are what they are because of protection — as the U.S. National Park Service’s mission statement says: “to preserve the natural and cultural resources of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of current and future generations.”
Food for thought as a gravely unfortunate second term for Donald Trump is imminent. His first term was not a positive for our National Parks, as I outlined in this article: https://www.mountaintripper.com/not-this-again/
We can only hope for the best while planning for the worst. In the meantime, let’s get out and enjoy some nature. We are only as strong as our minds, and nature can help to heal what ails us.
Take care now,
-Jake
