After an unplanned pause in Daily Dose, we’re coming in hot for Waterfall Wednesday.

Is it cliché to call Grand Falls a place like no other? Because it really is.

This 185-feet-tall, 200-feet wide behemoth seldom flows, but when it does, its like a muddy Niagara Falls out in the middle of the desert. I guess that’s why its nicknames include Chocolate Falls and Niagara of the Desert.

Unfortunately, I always have to mention this now, public access is no longer permitted at Grand Falls. Located in a remote stretch of the Navajo Reservation, the area increasingly fell victim to abuse by visitors, and the tribe rightfully decided to close it down.

I was fortunate enough to visit Grand Falls on a half-dozen occasions prior to the closure, including the one when I took this photo, on my birthday in February 2017.

Perhaps this is reason to say, if you really want to visit a certain place, go on a particular adventure, don’t wait too long. You never know when something might be taken away, whether it’s an access closure or a massive wildfire or God-knows-what. Life is short, take in the beauty while you can.
