Flashback to a sunset for the books from December 2023.

This is one of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever witnessed, and I just barely made it to the edge of the desert in time to see it.

It was one of those afternoons where I was hanging out in the backyard with my daughter. When my wife came home from work, I pointed to the western sky and said, “I think it’s going to be a great sunset tonight.”

She told me to go chase it, so I threw my camera bag in the car and headed toward the edge of the city. Twenty minutes later, I was driving past these saguaros, scoping them out while going 60 mph down the highway.

I drove a couple more miles, eyes peeled, but backtracked as this trio drew me in. I call them “The Three Amigos.” It was just a short walk from the highway shoulder to this view of them.

I wasn’t out there more than 20 minutes before the sun dipped far enough below the horizon to make the sky go nuclear. I caught The Three Amigos standing tall in that classic saguaro silhouette.

A slightly difference composition of this scene appears in my book Arizona: A Photographic Journey.
