This is my favorite rock at the Grand Canyon. I call it “The Monolith”.
And as today is Monochrome Monday, I call this photo “The Monolith in Mono”.
I’ve photographed this rock a few times since 2010, so it feels like an old friend. And in this light, it appears as a face. Well, a head with a neck but perhaps without the facial features. As if the Rapa Nui somehow found their way to the Colorado Plateau and began carving a Moai but didn’t get around to the eyes and nose.
But of course it was not humans that carved this sculpture. The wind and the rain chiseled this Kaibab Limestone bust to stand stoically over Grand Canyon, with no eyes to watch yet watching still over these sacred lands.
Once upon a time I would’ve disclosed its location, but it’s a special spot once seldom traveled that’s slowly becoming more and more popular, and I’d hate for it to turn into a zoo.
At least for today, it’s still fairly under-the-radar.
That about does it for today’s Daily Dose. If you’re like me, concerned about those seizing power today, just remember that our world is still a beautiful place, and that nature seeks to balance itself out.
Let us be stoic like our friend the Moai of Grand Canyon, weathering storms as they come, basking in the calm and the sunshine that will eventually be revealed.
