For this Throwback Thursday edition: the iconic view at Cape Royal on the Grand Canyon North Rim.

On a hazy afternoon in June 2015, pre-monsoon weather made for cloudless skies. Of course, June is wildfire season, and while there were fortunately no major fires that summer, a couple small fires burning to the west brought smoke into the Canyon on this day.

While I certainly prefer dramatic clouds when photographing landscapes, I learned to work with cloudless scenes by composing the photo to eliminate much of the sky and focus on the details of the Earth and her vegetation.

And without clouds but plenty of haze to refract sunlight, the golden glow blessed the sedimentary cliffs all the way out to the flat-topped head of Wotan’s Throne.

So while this was the only opportunity I’ve had to enjoy sunset at Cape Royal, I was fortunate enough to capture this photo, which is featured in Arizona: A Photographic Journey.

Well, that’s it for today’s Daily Dose. Much love, everyone!
