Poppyfield is a property that many Arizonans have seen from a distance, but few have visited.
Private property, not open to the public, but prominently featured in the view from the Taliesin Overlook on the popular Lost Dog Wash Trail.
Designed by the late David Dodge, it was his private residence for decades before he passed away in 2021 at age 91. An apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright but also a musician and gracious host, Dodge created this home as a place to throw parties.
Not wild college parties, of course, but ones of high class — where the piano was the centerpiece and the glass walls could be opened on mild winter evenings to allow guests room to enjoy the weather while the melodic sounds of piano wafted out into the desert.
I had the honor of photographing the property last May — a project that is coming to fruition as my photos will be featured in “The Living Architecture of David Elgin Dodge”, a book from OA+D Archives Press, which is slated for public release later this spring.
This photo likely won’t be in the book, but it is still one of my personal favorites from my time at Poppyfield.
