It’s Friday, so this Daily Dose will be short and sweet.

Last month I hiked up Calderwood Butte, a small desert hill here in Phoenix’s northwest suburbs. It’s one of my go-to places to get some exercise and get a little desert fix.

On this particular evening, I was hoping to catch a glimpse of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) after the sun went down. Obviously I snapped this photo while the sun was still up, backlighting a little stand of Saguaros.

Looking at this photo makes me appreciate where I live. I may not love the suburbs and the ignorant people with their obnoxiously big pickup trucks and their far-right views. But I sure am lucky to be able to drive 10 minutes and hike another 10 minutes and see a scene like this.

It’s a little piece of gratitude to grab onto when I need more of that in my life, and I hope you’ll take a moment to find a bit of gratitude today as well.

Happy Friday,

-Jake
